The purpose of the coursework phase is to deepen subject knowledge and teach methodological skills. A maximum of four semesters (two years) is allowed for this phase.
During the coursework phase, you must attend courses comprising at least 12 and a maximum of 36 credits, depending on the programme. One course is equal to 4 to 6 credits. For more information please refer to the curriculum of our programmes.
2. Research proposal
In addition to attending the methodology and specialist courses, you must also prepare a research proposal at the coursework phase. In the research proposal you must describe the thesis project and the methodological procedure and demonstrate preliminary research work.
In the research proposal colloquium, you will present your thesis project and justify your approach. The colloquium lasts at least 30 minutes and is not open to the public. Your thesis committee decides on whether your research proposal is accepted.
You must have passed the courses within four semesters from the start of your Ph.D. studies. You must also submit your research proposal within these four semesters (academic year: Spring Semester 31 July, Autumn Semester 31 January respectively).
